Southwest Baptist University, or SBU for short, is a private university located in Bolivar, which is the county seat of Polk County, situated in the US state of Missouri, having a population approximated at a number of more than 9000 students, during the 2000 census. Bolivar is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area and gets its name from the South American historical figure, Simón BolÃvar, who was nicknamed El Libertador (The Liberator).
SBU was officially established in 1878, by Abner S. Ingman and James R. Maupin, being originally located in Lebanon, MO, one year later being moved to its present location. The institution went through many financial difficulties in its early years, which led to its closing between 1910 and 1013. In 1913 the school re-opened its doors, and since then has continuously grown.
Currently, Southwest Baptist has an enrollment of more than 3000 students, and in addition to the main campus, in Bolivar, it also has campuses in Mountain View, Salem, and Springfield, Missouri. SBU offers its student various educational programs, in numerous fields of study, through several academic divisions, which include: College of Business and Computer Science, Courts Redford College of Theology and Ministry, Lewis E. Schollian College of Education and Social Sciences, Geneva Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters, College of Science and Mathematics and College of Science and Mathematics.
SBU's athletic teams are known as the Bearcats, who compete in NCAA Division II, MIAA, in 14 sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, soccer, cross country, tennis, softball and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are purple and white.
Roy Blunt, House Minority Whip for the 110th Congress (former President of university), Rod Jetton, former Speaker and Republican member of the Missouri House of Representatives and Shane Schoeller, Republican member of the Missouri House of Representatives are SBU's noteworthy alumni.
